FAQ - Frequently Asked Questions

I've heard it's much cheaper to buy a new car abroad

Most UK motorists have heard that new car prices are much lower abroad, with some cars costing up to 50% less in other European countries. Many drivers now look to Europe, the United States or even Japan for bargains or models unavailable in this country. And even if you don't fancy a trip abroad yourself, there are ever-growing numbers of agents who can source the car of your dreams at significant savings off UK price.

So what's the catch?

Inevitably, there are advantages and disadvantages, whether buying a 'grey import' (a non-UK spec car, or one not available officially in the UK) or a 'parallel import' (the same model as offered in the UK). Read on for the pros and cons, the do's and don'ts, and the myths.

Where do I buy from?

Most UK buyers find their cut-price new cars in European countries; it's easy to visit the Continent or the Republic of Ireland. Enthusiasts of sports models look to Japan for some of the fastest road-going supercars. Most Japanese cars are imported by brokers or agents.

I'm not sure I want to go abroad and sort it out myself

Plenty of brokers and agents advertise their services in motoring magazines, or on the Internet. If you don't have Internet access at home or at work, visit one of the Internet cafes and bars now open in many towns. Type in 'car imports' in any major search engine, and you will get a list of relevant websites. Agents advertising range from downright dodgy individuals to very reputable professional companies. Some will offer packages including ferry crossings to view and choose a car, and then to pick it up; some even deliver the car to your door. There are also UK-based independent dealers who source and sell imports, particularly Japanese exotica. Cash savings might not be so spectacular, but it saves a lot of hassle. Use your common sense when dealing with agents (see Dos and Don'ts).

If I go it alone, how do I find the car?

If you are sourcing a car yourself, the best way to find it is via the Internet. There are websites listing European dealerships, some giving prices and pictures of the cars in stock. Alternatively, try looking in the handbook supplied with a UK car - there may well be a listing of European dealers' showrooms for that make, with phone numbers and addresses. Oneleading importing company, Broadspeed Ltd. (find them on the Internet or via directory enquiries), publishes a very useful list of English-speaking dealers in Europe, together with sample price comparison tables.

So is it worth all the hassle?

Thousands of UK buyers who have already done it say YES. With average savings of £3000-£5000 on new cars, why not?
